Photographer
What to look for when selecting an ethical
photographer:
When selecting a photographer for that family portrait or that special day it is important to spend the time and do the research to select a professional that you feel comfortable with and that has a good quality reputation.
It is important to make sure that you are comparing
apples to apples. There is a big difference in even
the paper that is being used, whether it is inkjet
or real photographic paper. Please make sure that
you know the differences.
It is important to select a professional that
belongs to professional associations with a
dependable track record in your community. Many
events are booked months and months in advance and
you as the consumer must look for stability in the
professional that you select.
It is important to know and feel comfortable with
the person that is actually doing the shoot. Many
studios hire part time inexperienced “free lancers”
if they are over booked. Make sure you know and are
comfortable with the actual person taking the photos
at your event.
Make sure that the studio you select has a back up
plan in case of an accident/ illness or injury. This
is an item that is rarely thought of, but very
important. In cases of a portrait shoot, this may be
easily rescheduled. If the photographer was injured
in a car accident on the day of your wedding, then
what? A good professional studio will have a plan in
place, and will discuss this with you prior to
booking the event.
It is important to select a studio that has a viable
studio. Again, because stability is so important
when booking someone months in advance. Why take the
risk?
It is important to actually call and check at least
10 references. Make sure if you are hiring for a
wedding, the references are all from weddings.
When meeting with a photographer, make sure that the
photographer is listening to your needs. It is
important to make sure your expectations are
completely understood by the photographer, not a
salesperson.
It is important to make sure that your photographer
is fully insured. If a photographer slipped and was
injured, you do not want to have that special day
remembered for the lawsuit that follows. Why take
the risk? A good ethical photographer will prove to
you that they and their helpers are insured.
In today’s
digital world there are so-called professional
photographers popping up everywhere. It can not be
emphasized enough that there are tremendous
differences in the final product. Make sure that you
are really comparing apples to apples. It is also
important that the photographer has a staff member
with them at the shoot. It is even better if the
second person is also a qualified photographer. Many
great shots are missed if there is only one set of
eyes, and there are no do overs.
What to avoid when
selecting an ethical photographer:
A photographer that
is not fully insured.
A photographer that is not
accredited and a member of professional
organizations.
A photographer that does not have
a studio.
A photographer that does not discuss
with you an emergency plan.
A photographer that
comes alone.
Any studio in which you are talking
to sales representatives and not to the photographer
that will actually be at your event.
A
photographer that does not listen to your needs and
spends most of the time selling their services.
A
photographer that does not provide at least 10
references that match your event.
