In Home Health Aides

What to look for when selecting an ethical in home health agency:

When selecting any in home health agency you should select a company that:

  1. Shows you a copy of their state licensure.

  2. Shows you a copy of their proof of insurance.

  3. Verifies and actually calls employee references.

  4. Can prove that their aides are bonded, have workers compensation insurance, and liability insurance.

  5. Can prove that thorough background checks are done including criminal and credit check.

  6. A good ethical company will allow you to terminate service at any time without a termination charge.

  7. Explains clearly how they handle problems and complaints.

  8. Provides documentation of all costs and services to be provided.

  9. Will not apply pressure to make a hasty decision.

  10. Will spend the time and work with you to determine what level and frequency of care is appropriate.

The important thing to understand about the home health care industry is to take your time and do the research. It is important that you and your loved ones are comfortable with the person meeting your needs. Most people are unaware of this, but it is against the law to have more than 1 person take care of someone unless they are a relative or a licensed agency. There is a reason the law was passed, to protect the consumer. It is our strong opinion to make sure that you go through a licensed professional that is fully insured, does thorough background checks on all of their employees and you meet with the owner directly.

What to avoid when selecting a business in this industry:

  1. Companies that do not show you their insurance policy. If worker is injured on your property and the aide giver is not insured you may be liable. Why take that risk?

  2. Companies that play price games. It is impossible to determine a real price over the phone; many companies will low-ball the price in order to get a high pressure sales representative in your home.

  3. Companies that do not prove that thorough background checks are completed on all employees.

  4. It is always wise to select an agency that has a proven track record in the industry.

  5. Understand that quotes over the phone may be lower than what you actually will end up paying. In order to receive a true “price quote” an interview and assessment must be completed.

  6. You get what you pay for. If you want qualified and insured care givers, you may need to pay a little more, but in most cases it is money well spent.

  7. Make sure that you are comparing apples to apples. There is a big difference in the quality of aide and you really do get what you pay for.
