Funeral
Home and Cremation
What to look for when selecting
an ethical funeral home and cremation service:
After spending time researching the
funeral home industry we were very impressed with
the way in which the State has overseen the industry
and the amount of safeguards in place to protect the
consumer. As with many industries we have found that
selecting a locally owned business with a long track
record within the community, you are more likely to
be satisfied.
It is our opinion that it is always
wise to pre-plan your arrangements with a local
funeral home. You can actually make the arrangements
with no out of pocket costs. This way you can do the
research and make decisions clearly, and eliminate
the burden from your loved ones.
- All funeral homes are required to provide
every family a general price list. Please make
sure that you have a line-itemed price list.
- Make sure that everything that you are
expecting and pay for is written down.
- An ethical funeral home will not rush you to
make any decisions.
- An ethical funeral home will only charge sales
tax on the merchandise purchased and not the
services.
It
is always important to make sure that you are
comparing apples to apples in services and
merchandise. This is not a product or service that
most consumers know the cost or are very familiar
with. We have found prices very dramatically in this
industry and the middle ground is usually a safe
place. Please do your research.
What to avoid when selecting a
business in this industry:
- There is a tendency for the corporately owned
funeral homes to charge more for the same
products and services. Please take your time and
do the research.
- Make sure the funeral home has a long track
record in the community. If they do, you are
less likely to be taken advantage of at your
time of loss.
- Make sure that you have an itemized line by
line estimate of everything that is involved in
the service.
