Bookkeeping Services

What to look for when selecting an ethical bookkeeper:

When selecting a bookkeeping service, here are some items to consider:

  1. Does the company have experience and a solid track record within the community?
  2. Does the person doing the books have accounting experience and software experience (i.e. QuickBooks)? Do they have a bookkeeping or an accounting certification or degree rather than just hands-on experience?
  3. Does the business have a local physical address?
  4. Does the company have professional liability insurance? Why would you take the risk by having an uninsured person take control of your company’s books?
  5. Is the bookkeeper bonded? Any bookkeeper that is writing checks for you should be bonded. Again, why take the risk?
  6. Does the bookkeeper have references from your industry?
  7. An ethical bookkeeper is going to be asking a lot of questions so they can be sure to understand your business needs. (I.e. what is your business structure, how do you receive payments and pay bills, what information is important to you to track, etc.)
  8. An ethical bookkeeper will have a difficult time giving price quotes over the phone. In most cases the hourly rate is irrelevant - it is the cost to do the work that is important. A qualified, experienced professional may charge 30% more by the hour, but may be able to do twice as much work per hour. Most quotes over the phone are probably going to be low ball numbers anyway.

Please take the time to allow the bookkeeper to fully understand your company and how it operates. By spending the time to select a professional, experienced bookkeeper and investing the additional time to educate them about your business operation, it is amazing how much time and money can be saved.

What to avoid when selecting a business in this industry:

  1. A bookkeeper that is not insured (ask for proof of insurance).

  2. A bookkeeper that refuses to be bonded.

  3. A bookkeeper that can't give you references in your industry.

  4. A bookkeeper that has software experience, but no real accounting experience.

After interviewing and running an extensive background check the National Association Against Consumer Fraud has awarded the following business a listing in The Business A-List:

The Roper Group, Inc.

1304 Paddock Drive, Suite F-101
Raleigh, NC 27609
Phone (919) 873-1688

www.ropergroup.com

Why Roper Group, Inc. was offered the opportunity to be a Business A-List participant?

Unlike most decisions, selecting an ethical bookkeeper is a very difficult decision. There are no products to touch or feel and selecting the wrong bookkeeper could result in a financial disaster.

After spending time interviewing Jess McLamb, President of the Roper Group, I could tell right away they were different. The Roper Group spends the time to get to know their clients and their business operation and has the accounting knowledge and experience to assist in all of their clients’ needs.
