Before selecting an architect it is important to understand what an architect really does. Yes, they design the building, but a good architect handles much more than that. A good architect will take into account the construction and administrative ends, the environment, new technology as well as the long term life span of the building.

When selecting an architect, here are some items to ask the potential business:

  1. Please explain life cycle costing and how does it apply to this project?

  2. Energy use?

  3. What green technology is available for this project?

  4. How site specific (people specific for residential) is the design going to be?

  5. How many projects do you take on at a time?

  6. Can you please explain the entire process?

  7. How many times do you meet with me during the process?

  8. Please explain the role of interns in your organization?

Please take the time to allow the Architect to fully understand your project and how the building will be utilized. By spending the time to select a professional, experienced architect and investing the additional time to educate them about your project, it is amazing how much time and money can be saved.

It is also important to make sure that the architect has done projects that are similar to yours. Please check the references on similar projects.
