Roofing

What to look for when selecting an ethical Roofing Company:

  1. Check for a permanent place of business, telephone number and a business license. A professional roofer will have these readily available.

  2. Don't hesitate to ask the roofing contractor for proof of all the insurances they carry.

  3. Make sure they show you proof of general liability and workers' compensation insurance to protect you if your property is damaged or if someone is injured working on your property.

  4. Make sure the contractor is financially stable. A good company should not ask for more than a 10 to 20% deposit.

  5. Insist on a written proposal on company letterhead. Before you sign a contract make sure you understand all the terms of the agreement and make sure it provides detailed information on the work to be performed.

  6. Have the contractor explain his quality control procedures. Request that your Sales Representative or contact person for the company meet with you or call you.

  7. Carefully read, understand, and ask questions regarding any roof warranty offered and watch for provisions that would void it.

  8. Look for a company with a proven track record that allows you to call references to verify their work.

  9. Professionalism is very important; look at how the company represents itself during their first meeting with you.

  10. If installing a new roof, select a company that fully explains all your options. If a company says you need a new roof, ask them if they mind you getting a second opinion.

Questions to ask when selecting a company in this industry:

  1. What kind of debris will be left on my property, and what kind of clean-up procedures does your company follow?

  2. How long have you been in business?

  3. Will you let me call some of your past customers?

  4. Have you done any roofs in my area I could look at?

  5. What type of warranty do I receive?

  6. Do you subcontract out your work, or will you bring only employees to my job site?

  7. Will I need a permit? Does your company provide the permit?

  8. How long will this job take?

What to avoid when selecting a business in this industry:

  1. Companies that subcontract out all of their work.

  2. A company that asks for a large deposit before starting a job.

  3. A company that pushes hard for a decision on the first visit.

  4. A company that does not present you with a detailed estimate on company stationary.

  5. A company that asks you to pull a permit?

  6. A company without a proven track record.

  7. Be weary of an extreme low-ball bid. The roofing industry is full of stories of consumers who tried to get something for nothing and paid dearly for it.
