Physical
/ Massage Therapist
What to look for when
selecting an ethical Physical / Massage Therapist:
Physical therapy is a
hands-on way to treat and relieve muscle and joint
pain. While other forms of medical treatment tend to
talk and prescribe their way to relief, physical
therapists manipulate the body to work out pain.
Physical therapists complete medical training and
are educated on injury prevention, as well as
physical therapy techniques. Please keep in mind
that the most important thing to remember when
choosing the right physical therapist is that you
need to feel comfortable with the therapist you
select. If you become unhappy with your therapy
services at any time, you have the right to change
and receive services at another physical therapy
clinic at any time. Don't be afraid to switch just
because you have gone to your therapist a few times.
-
Look
at their education levels; graduates receive
either a Doctorate (DPT) or a Masters (MPT) in
physical therapy, where therapists who graduated
several years ago received a Bachelor (BSPT) or
Masters (MPT) with a similar level of education.
-
Find
out if your therapy will involve a group setting
with other patients or will you receive
individual care. Also, find out if you will be
working with different therapists.
-
You
will be spending a lot of time with the staff so
make sure you are comfortable with their
credentials and personality. Do they have a
college degree or state license to provide
therapy services? Or are they just aides who are
receiving on-the-job training.
-
Look
for individual treatment rooms or curtains that
can be pulled to provide a more private
treatment area if privacy is important to you.
It's a good idea to tour a few facilities prior
to deciding where you want to receive therapy.
-
If
you feel skeptical, by all means ask for
references.
-
A
professional therapist should talk to you about
your treatment process before actually
performing any action.
-
Make
sure they explain to you fully how your
insurance coverage works.
-
If
you have Medicare, make sure you are billed
correctly. Medicare has limits as to how much
they cover per year. If you are doing therapy in
a group setting with other patients, make sure
they do not bill you for individual care.
Questions to ask when selecting a business in this industry:
-
Do
they offer options in treatment? There is no
right answer, so make sure you get the right
options for you.
-
Do
they have the right equipment needed to
effectively treat you? For example, do you need
access to weight equipment, a pool or balance
equipment?
-
Is
the facility large enough to see patients in
comfort and maintain your privacy?
-
Are
they APTA members?
-
Will
I see a licensed therapist or will I see aides?
Will a Doctor or Physical Therapist be present
if I am receiving therapy from an assistant and/
or aides?
-
Will
you help me to understand my plan of care before
we get started?
