Home Health Care

What to look for when selecting an ethical Home Health Care Company:

  1. Make sure you can receive references from each company you talk to. These references should include patients and their families as well as local physicians.

  2. Make sure you understand what type of healthcare you are in need of. A good company will help you figure this out before trying to offer you their services. Some agencies only provide skilled nursing, while others provide physical, occupational and speech therapy. There are also companies that provide only home companions.

  3. Make sure the company works in your area. This may seem like a small detail, but they should have staff that knows details of your area. If they will be driving you to doctors appointments as well as your personal needs it helps if their familiar with your area.

  4. If they will be driving your car, call your car insurance company and add them to your policy as a caregiver. There is usually no fee for this.

  5. Agency must be licensed and certified in specific counties within your state. Most companies will provide you with this information before you even ask

  6. A home health care agency should be a member of a professional organization. One of the largest organizations is the National Association for Home Care (NAHC). Also inquire if the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) accredits the agency. JCAHO is the largest and most respected accrediting body for the health care industry.

  7. Look for a company with a stable history and proven record. If it's a national company find out how long they have worked in your area.

  8. Make sure to inquire about their hiring process. Do they obtain and verify references? Do they train new employees regarding their specific guidelines and requirements? Are the caregivers bonded and insured? Do they undergo a criminal background check? Are they tested for drugs?

  9. Look for a company that provides a "Patient Bill of Rights" that outlines the rights and responsibilities of the providers, patients, and caregivers.

  10. Look for a company that will try to provide caregivers that will match your needs and personality.

  11. Look for a company that has a detailed web site that will answer many of your questions.

What questions to ask when selecting a company in this industry:

  1. How do they match a caregiver to a patient?

  2. How often are caregivers supervised while providing care?

  3. Is staff available 24 hours a day or is care limited to specific hours?

  4. Also, can you contact a nurse or supervisor any time a caregiver is scheduled to be in your home?

  5. Do they try to find a replacement if the scheduled caregiver is unable to make it to your home?

  6. What experience and/or credentials does the management have to provide home care services?

  7. How often do care managers visit in the home to evaluate services?

  8. Do they require a good driving record, criminal background check, and drug testing of their employees?

  9. What type of ongoing training do they provide their staff?

  10. Are they available to answer your problems or concerns 24 hours a day?

  11. Will my insurance cover your services?

  12. What are my responsibilities in regards to your services and reimbursement?
