Cabinetry
What to look for when selecting an ethical
Cabinetry Company:
-
Check
for a permanent place of business, telephone
number and a business license. Make sure the
company and its subcontractors are properly
licensed.
-
Look
for a company that will let you meet them at
their place of business.
-
Look
for a company that shows you proof of general
liability insurance and workers' compensation.
If they utilize subcontractors make sure you see
proof that their insured.
-
Look
for a company that has a showroom and utilizes
computerized software systems to show you
different maps of how your finished cabinets
will appear.
-
An
ethical company should have no problem providing
you a list of references with phone numbers.
-
Look
for a company that will explain their complaint
process, if you have a concern or a complaint.
-
Insist
on a written proposal on company letterhead.
Before you sign a contract make sure you
understand all the terms of the agreement and
make sure it provides detailed information on
the work to be performed. Make sure the contract
is specific as to time, price and products and
is on company letterhead.
-
Look
for a company that explains their warranty
policy thoroughly. Find out if the cabinets are
under a manufacturer's warranty. If so, go to
the manufacturer's website and research the
product and the warranty. The labor warranty
should be a minimum of one year.
-
Look
for a company that's comfortable with you
getting more than one estimate.
-
Ask
the Company if they are members of any
professional trade organizations.
-
Ask
the Company to explain thoroughly all their
different product lines. Make sure the product
you select meets your needs as to price, layout,
look and durability. Verify what is being
installed is exactly what you are paying for.
-
Make
sure they utilize qualified installers. Ask if
subcontractors are being used in your home for
installation.
-
Call
subcontractor if the company utilizes them and
make sure the company pays them in a timely
manner. Remember by law, the subcontractors can
place a lien on your house if the contractor
fails to pay them.
-
Installation
is very important in this industry. Ask to meet
the person who will supervise the installation.
Make sure the cabinets are installed to
manufacturer specifications.
-
Look
for a company which thoroughly explains the care
process required to maintain the cabinetry.
What to avoid when selecting a business in this
industry:
-
Companies
that will not show you proof of their insurance.
-
Companies
that are not properly licensed.
-
Companies
that do not appear professional.
-
Companies
that play price games.
-
Companies
that will not provide you a detailed estimate
and contract on company stationary.
-
Companies
that ask for excessive deposits.
-
Companies
that apply pressure to purchase today.
-
Companies
that will not let you call past customers.
-
You
get what you pay for. If you want qualified and
licensed installers, you may need to pay a
little more, but in most cases its money well
spent.
-
Companies
that make guarantees that appear too good to be
true.
-
Be
weary of a company that provides a low-ball
price, there could be a reason for it.
-
Companies
and their subcontractors if applicable that do
not perform criminal background checks on their
workers.
