1. A good ethical boarding facility will encourage you to inspect the facilities.


 

• You should check the water and food bowls to make sure they are fresh and clean.

• Do the animals appear happy?

• Does the facility smell clean or does it smell of urine or masking agents?

• Is there an indoor and outdoor run?

• Are the animals crated?

• How does the staff interact with the animals?

• Is there a play area.

• Do they separate animals based on size and temperament?

• Will they let you bring your own food and bedding?

• Do they inspect pets for fleas and ticks?
   

2. Verify and actually check the license to make sure that it is current.

3. Ask if they work closely with a Vet and find out who they work with?

4. What emergency services do they provide and will they call you immediately if a medical problem arises?

5. Get everything in writing, make sure what is in the contract is actually what is going to be done. Make sure that there are no hidden charges.

6. Make sure they ask for and make you fill out a medical questionnaire on your pet. Make sure they require flea and tick medicine and require and inspect all pets for proper vaccinations.

7. Ask if while you are away a friend or neighbor could come and visit the pet.

The important thing to understand about a pet boarding facility is to take the time to inspect the facilities and make sure that you are comfortable with the caregivers you select to look after your pet.

What to avoid when selecting a company in this industry: 

1. Companies that play price games. Many boarding facilities will “low ball” over the phone and when you arrive to drop off your pet will start adding fees that SHOULD be included. Get the total price before comparing fees.

2. Use your eyes and nose, it will tell you a tremendous amount about the facilities.

3. Also, use your judgment. Do the people taking care of your pet love animals or are they looking for a paycheck?

4. Companies that do not provide and check medical records.
