What to look for when
selecting an ethical Kitchen and Bath Remodeling
Company:
Check for a permanent place of
business, telephone number and a business
license. Look for a company that will let
you meet them at their place of business. Don't hesitate to ask the
contractor for proof of all the insurance they
carry. Make sure they show you proof of
general liability and workers' compensation
insurance to protect you if your property is
damaged or a worker is injured on your property.
Request a copy of their certificates for your
records. Make sure the contractor is
financially stable. Ask the contractor to supply
you with a financial reference. You want to make
sure that the contractor has a good business
relationship with a financial institution. Insist on a written proposal on
company letterhead. Before you sign a contract
make sure you understand all the terms of the
agreement and make sure it provides detailed
information on the work to be performed. Carefully read, understand, and
ask questions regarding any warranty offered and
watch for provisions that would void it. Request
a copy of the contract. Be sure to read and
understand all terms and conditions. Look for a company with a proven
track record that allows you to call references
to verify their work. Professionalism is very
important; look at how the company represents
itself during their first impression with you. Make sure you've seen at least
two examples of the contractor's work. Provides you with a list of
subcontractors that will be used during your
project if the contractor uses them. Call them
and make sure the contractor is timely with
their payments. Remember by law, subcontractors
can place a lien on your house if your
contractor fails to pay them. Look for a company that fully
explains your options and will work within your
budget. Verify their General Contractors
number with the state. Never do business with a company
that asks you to pull a building permit.
Questions to ask when
selecting a company in this industry:
How long have you been in
business? Will you let me call some of
your past customers? Do you have a physical address? What type of warranty do I
receive on materials and labor? Do you subcontract out your
work, or will you bring only employees to my job
site? Can I call your subcontractors? If you use subcontractors, can
you show proof of their insurance? Do you have a showroom? Do I need a Building permit? Do you do criminal background
checks on all the workers who will be at my
home?
