Tires and Alignment

What to look for when selecting an ethical Tire and Alignment Shop:

  1. Make sure the mechanic(s) are ASE Certified. The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence is a professional certification testing organization for mechanics. www.asecert.org

  2. Make sure they are comfortable working on your type of car. If you visit the shop and only see one type of car, and it’s not yours, you may want to continue looking for a new shop.

  3. An independent tire alignment shop may treat customers with more interest and honesty compared to large chain based shops.

  4. Don’t be afraid to get estimates from a few different companies.

  5. Contact references and ask if the service was reliable and how satisfied they were with their service.

  6. Make sure to show interest; don’t be afraid to ask questions you might have about your repair bill. If they see you looking at the bill and asking questions about it, they will be less likely to add on extras.

  7. Look for a company that will provide you with a detailed estimate with a written quote on parts and labor charges.

  8. When purchasing tires for your vehicle, there is more than one brand of tire that’s appropriate for your vehicle. Look for a shop that explains your options thoroughly as to price, tread wear, look and availability.

  9. Look for a Tire and Alignment shop that treats you like a family member.

  10. If you think you need an alignment, look for a shop that asks you questions about why you might need an alignment. Does your car pull to either side?

  11. Alignment checks are recommended by most manufacturers at specific mileage or time intervals, but are most important when steering, suspension parts or driveline components have been replaced. Alignment is also recommended for new tires, abnormal tire wear and when your car pulls to either side.

Questions to ask when selecting a company in this industry:

  1. How long have you been in business?

  2. How much is your hourly rate?

  3. When can you fit me in?

  4. Do I have a warranty on the work that you complete?

  5. How does the warranty on tires work?

  6. Do you have ASE certified technicians?

  7. Will you diagnose my problem for free?

  8. Will you road test after the repairs are completed?

What to avoid when selecting a business in this industry:

  1. You want to avoid your best friend’s brother’s cousin to repair your vehicle? Chances are these mechanics are not certified and most definitely don’t provide warranties.

  2. Avoid a company or person that offers great deals, but can’t provide receipts.

  3. A technician that is too eager to suggest the most expensive tires first.

  4. Avoid a company that doesn’t provide parts and labor warranties.

  5. Avoid a company that will not provide an itemized receipt. Your bill shouldn’t say, suspension $300.00.

  6. Don’t pick a shop before stopping in and taking a look around. Stay away from a shop that is not clean, looks in disarray and does not have uniformed service techs.

  7. Avoid any Auto Dealer who tells you they must service your car to maintain your manufacturer’s warranty. This is simply not true.
