Podiatrist
What to look for when
selecting an ethical Podiatrist:
-
It's
a good idea to choose one that has a membership
in the American Podiatric Medical Association or
the American Board of Podiatric Surgery.
-
Look
for a podiatrist that is Board Certified by an
appropriate board.
-
Look
for a podiatrist that accepts your health
insurance. Most services administered by a
podiatrist are covered. Ask the podiatrist and
your insurance company if procedures performed
will be covered. Insurance companies never pay
the physician their standard fee. See if the
physician will consider a reduction from their
regular fee for one comparable to what an
insurance company would pay.
-
Look
for a podiatrist that you can interact well with
and one that you feel confident that he or she
is genuinely interested in your care.
-
Look
for a podiatrist that will spend time with you
discussing your ailment, treatment options and
prevention. It is important that the podiatrist
will discuss proper foot care and tell you what
to look for when examining your own feet.
-
Look
for a podiatrist that will exhaust all
conservative treatment options before
recommending surgery. However, there are some
instances where surgery is the first line of
treatment, but that is not common.
-
Look
for a podiatrist that will spend time educating
you on your problem and how to correct it. Many
problems can be improved with proper footwear
and custom orthotics.
Questions to ask when
selecting a company in this industry:
-
Is
the Physician Board Certified in the area of
care you require?
-
Do
they accept your insurance and does my insurance
cover my specific treatment?
-
Ask
the Physician what methods he or she uses to
stay current with continual education?
-
If I
do need surgery, which hospitals do you have
privileges at, and is it an accredited hospital
that is on my insurance provider list?
-
Does
the Physician provide patient education?
-
Does
the Physician accept phone calls during office
hours?
-
How
do they handle billing?
-
Will
the physician fully discuss my treatment options
and is the physician conservative in his or her
approach to surgery.
-
Ask
the physician what percentage of your patients
with my assessment do you perform surgery on?
