Home Theater / Automation

What to look for when selecting an ethical Home Theater Company:

  1. If someone is putting holes in your walls and hanging your new plasma TV, make sure the company has general liability insurance and workers' compensation insurance.

  2. Make sure the company is properly licensed and ask them to show you proof of insurance.

  3. Look for a company with a proven track record.

  4. It's very important that you choose a company that will spend time with you educating you on the products available and the different features. Know what features are important to you and research your options (equipment) on the manufacturer's website.

  5. Make sure you understand the warranty on the products you purchase.

  6. Make sure to check references.

  7. A storefront is a major plus. Ask them to demonstrate some of their work. Most companies will have a state of the art theater room for you to test out.

  8. Find out if you can provide your own equipment or they might try to sell you new versions of things you already own. Make a list of your options.

  9. Will they listen to what you want, or do they have their own version of what you want.

  10. Preset your budget, there is a system for every budget. Make sure they can do work within your budget.

  11. A certified CEDIA (Custom Electronic Design & Installation Association) installer is a big plus.

What to avoid when selecting a company in this industry:

  1. Someone that carries only products you have never heard of.

  2. Someone that doesn't offer a portfolio of their work. Make sure you can see what they do, they should also allow you to contact the families associated with their portfolio as referrals.

  3. Be careful of companies that say they won't give out referrals because they don't like to bother their customers.

  4. Be careful of companies that charge for a consultation, or in other words, they try to charge you to earn your business.

  5. Avoid an installer that will berate your equipment.

  6. Avoid companies that will not take the time to listen to your needs and spend the time to educate you on your options.

  7. A company that does not do criminal background checks on their workers.

  8. A company that will not show you proof of insurance.
