Dog Training

What to look for when selecting an ethical Dog Trainer:

  1. Start with a solid recommendation. Recommendations from your vet, the SPCA, the humane society, your breeder or local dog club can be the best starting point.

  2. Inquire about their training background, years of experience, and areas of expertise.

  3. Look for a trainer that loves their job. You will be able to tell if your trainer does their job for the money or if they do it for their love of dogs.

  4. Check references provided and don't just "take their word for it"; professional trainers may have famous or locally well known clients. A trainer that name drops maybe more interested in gaining your wallet than your dogs respect.

  5. Make sure you feel comfortable working with your trainer. In order to achieve optimal results, you will need to work closely in hand with your trainer.

  6. Your dog trainer should treat all dogs and owners the same.

What to avoid when selecting a company in this industry:

  1. A Trainer that will not or cannot give you a list of referrals, especially from local veterinarians.

  2. Be careful of a trainer that insists you purchase gimmick products from them to help in the training.

  3. If they are not familiar with your breed of dog while first talking with them (unless it is an extremely rare breed), ask them why they are not familiar with tour type of dog.

  4. Ask how many dogs they have trained and how many years they have been in business.

  5. If your personality and that of your trainer does not mesh. Find a trainer that fits your personality as well as your dogs.

  6. Be skeptical of a trainer that loves to name all the top celebrities dogs they have trained.

  7. Make sure your trainer isn't calling themselves a professional when they have actually only attended a weekend course on dog training.
